Big Bird Race

The Big Bird Race (BBR) is WWF's longest-running flagship event, raising funds for conservation since 1984. The funds raised from this event will directly contribute to the conservation work in Mai Po Marshes Wildlife Education Centre and Nature Reserve which in 1995 was listed as a “Wetland of International Importance” under the Ramsar Convention.

Mai Po Nature Reserve depends heavily upon charitable donations for the continued management and upkeep of its internationally important wetland habitats. Half of the money raised through BBR 2012 will be used to restore more Black-faced Spoonbill habitat in Gei wai #3 and #4. The other half will be used to purchase machinery that will help maintain the Mai Po Nature Reserve as an internationally important wetland. The machinery – a mid-sized excavator and a mini-digger - will be used to enhance migratory bird roosts, improve the quality of freshwater ponds, and maintain the ecological integrity of the gei wai.

For the first time since the start of the Big Bird Race, corporate sponsors will have an opportunity to participate! The Corporate Race will be held in April 2012 and offer an opportunity for corporate staff or clients to experience birdwatching. Click here for more details.

The Big Bird Race 2012 for professionals also welcomes participants from across the Asia-Pacific region to join in the game. It will be held on 11th February (Saturday), 2012. Click here for more details.

Over 50,000 waterbirds wintering at Mai Po each winter.

Despite having a land area of only 1,095 square kilometres, Hong Kong is an excellent place for bird watching. It is a habitat for over 500 species of birds representing almost a third of the total number of bird species in the whole of China. You can find stunning songbirds, a rich diversity of waterbirds and even rare and threatened bird species that are difficult to find in other places.

The Big Bird Race (BBR) has enabled WWF to acquire and manage land at the Mai Po Nature Reserve for conservation and education purposes. The importance of the site has been recognized by being listed as a 'Wetland of International Importance' under the Ramsar Convention. Situated on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay wetland acts as an important stop-over site for many migratory waterbirds to rest, feed and replenish their energy reserves before setting off on the next stage of their long journey.

The majority of funds raised from the BBR 2012 and the Corporate Race will help maintain Mai Po as an internationally important wetland for the benefit of both people and wildlife.
